The Third of May 1808 depicts the execution of Spanish civilians by French soldiers during the Peninsular War. The painting shows a group of civilians, including a man in the foreground with his hands raised, being shot by a firing squad. It is part of a pair with The Second of May 1808, both commissioned by Spain's provisional government to commemorate resistance against Napoleon's occupation. The work is now housed in the Museo del Prado in Madrid, Spain.
