The Sortie Made by the Garrison of Gibraltar is a 1789 oil-on-canvas painting by American artist John Trumbull. The painting depicts a pivotal moment in Gibraltar's history during the Great Siege of Gibraltar, when the Spanish attempted to capture the British-held fortress in November 1781. It shows Spanish officer Don Jose de Barboza being honored as he lies dying, despite being left behind by his retreating troops. He valiantly but unsuccessfully attacks the British troops with chivalry.
